This child’s cardigan is knit using several stitches and knitting techniques including the beautiful butterfly stitch, stockinette stitch, 1x1 ribbing and tubular bind off. It is knit from the bottom up, starting with a border in 1x1 rib, then stockinette stitch with a butterfly stitch pattern along each side of the button placket.

The sleeves are knit with a 1x1 rib cuff followed by stockinette stitch. They are then joined to the body of the sweater where decreases form the raglan part of the sleeve.

The neckline is in 1x1 rib with a tubular bind off that gives a smooth finish to the sweater.

Supplies :

  • Sizes:
    • 3 months (6 months) 12 month [18 month] 2 years (4 years) 6 years [8 years] 10 years - The table of measurements can be found on page 9.
  • Needles:
    • Needle N1: For the ribbing: Suggested size: 2.5 mm (US #1.5 / UK 10) Circular needles with a cable +/- 60 cm or double pointed needles of a similar size.
    • Needle N2: For the body, sleeves and button band: Suggested size: 3.5 mm (US #4 / UK 13) Circular needles with a cable +/- 60 cm ordouble pointed needles of a similar size.
  • Swatch/Gauge:
    • 225 stitches x 36 rows in stockinette stitch should produce a square 10x10 cm (4inx4in). Adjust the size of your needles to obtain the required gauge.
    • It is very important that you make a swatch with the yarn and needles you have chosen to use as an improper gauge will mean an ill-fitting garment. If you have more stitches and rows per 10 cm, switch to larger needles. If there are fewer stitches and rows per 10 cm, switch to smaller needles.
  • Yarn:
    • Yarn: Approximately 265 (320) 380 [425] 440 (585) 635 [785] 880 meters
    • Type: Depending on how you knit: Sport, DK or chunky fingering. I used Wooliette's Cachemerino fingering for the model in the photo.

  • 1 crochet hook to make the butterfly stitch (optional)
  • 1 darning needle for the tubular bind off
  • 14 Markers
  • 5-7 buttons depending on the size of the sweater - 1.5 cm in diameter
  • 4 pieces of scrap yarn or large stitch holders

Safety for the baby

The blanket should be used occasionally when out and about to cover the baby when in a stroller, bouncer or car seat.

In order to avoid any risk of danger with a blanket, it is strongly advised not to put your baby to sleep in a bed with blankets, comforters and a bumper. Specialists recommend that babies sleep only in a sleeping bag.

The use of a baby blanket must always be done under the supervision of an adult in order to prevent any accident.

It is only from the age of 3 that the child will be able to sleep with a blanket in his bed.

By purchasing a cover pattern, you acknowledge the risks associated with the product you are making. If you are offering a hand-knitted blanket, you should warn parents of the risks of using a blanket.
